Julia Shaw

Julia Shaw holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Indiana University, where she was the recipient of the Lucie M. Kohlmeier scholarship in voice, the Krueger scholarship in choral conducting, and the Mary R. Book scholarship in music education. In addition to graduating with high distinction, she was honored with the Austin B. Caswell award for outstanding musicology research. Her vocal study was with Mary Ann Hart and Maria Williams. Mrs. Shaw has also recently begun her Master of Music degree in conducting at Butler University, where she studies with Henry Leck. She is a certified Kodály educator, having completed levels I, II and III at Indiana University, where she studied with Dr. Brent Gault.

Mrs. Shaw currently serves as choir director at Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School, having recently been selected as that school’s Teacher of the Year. Her Zionsville West Middle School Sixth Grade Choir was invited to perform at the January 2007 Indiana Music Educators Association convention. As the recipient of several grants, Mrs. Shaw has commissioned new music and hosted noted guest artists in residence with her school choirs. Her students have regularly been selected to perform with the ACDA Central Division Honor Choir and the IMEA All-State Honor Choir. The Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter sponsored by Mrs. Shaw has been named Indiana State Chapter of the Year and runner-up for National Chapter of the Year in 2004 and 2005.

Prior to coming to Zionsville, Mrs. Shaw was the choir director at Eastwood Middle School in Indianapolis. She previously spent four years on staff with the Indiana University Children’s Choir, where she served as musicianship teacher, a conductor’s assistant and interim director of the Descant choir. She also was a section coach at St. Charles School in Bloomington and has taught Musikgarten.

Mrs. Shaw currently enjoys singing with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, and her professional affiliations include Music Educators National Conference, Indiana Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, Indiana Choral Directors Association, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity. While she’s not teaching, she enjoys distance running and is looking forward to completing her fourth marathon soon.
