Diana Szelei

CONDUCTING CHARTER SCHOOL CHOIR PROGRAM

Diana Szelei is the director of the Charter School Choir Program for the Indianapolis Children's Choir. From 1999-2004, she lived, worked and studied in Kecskemét, Hungary. During her time abroad, Mrs. Szelei successfully completed the advanced level Kodály Course in Music Pedagogy at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute, a division of the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor of Music Education degree at Butler University.

Mrs. Szelei is currently teaching at Christel House Academy, a charter school on the near Southside of Indianapolis, IN. Christel House Academy is part of a global school network whose mission is to help children around the world break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient, contributing members of society. At CHA, she teaches general and instrumental music to Kindergarten through 8th graders. She also directs an after-school private lessons program in association with Butler Community Arts School (BCAS). This partnership provides private lessons on guitar, violin, piano, and drums to be given to an underserved population of Indianapolis.

Mrs. Szelei is a former Kindermusik teacher and worked with the ICC Kindermusik program from 1998-1999 and 2004-2005. During the summer of 2006 she completed her Orff Level 1 training at Anderson University with Lisa Sullivan and Sarah Hassler.

Additionally, Mrs. Szelei keeps an active performance schedule. She sings professionally at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church of Indianapolis, IN. She has given numerous solo and chamber recitals on flute and voice in Indianapolis and abroad. She is highly involved in the promotion of the Kodály method. Her credits include a 2001 BBC interview, as well as being an editor of Pál, Kardos’s theoretical studies on correct intonation entitled Intonation and Vocal Training in Choir (Publisher: Kodály Institute (2005).
