What are ICC’s First Steps in Music classes?...

Fun musical experiences for young children to learn and share with their parents or teachers!

The Indianapolis Children’s Choir offers First Steps in Music classes to children ages 1 1/2 to 5 years old.  These classes take place in preschools throughout the Indianapolis area, as well as in classes open to all children from Central Indiana on the campus of Butler University.  Through the 8 basic activities included in First Steps in Music classes, children and their parents/teachers experience singing, creative movement, simple instruments, fingerplays and more with the help of the rich collection of traditional songs and rhymes from past generations.

The 8 Basic Activities of First Steps in Music classes are:
      Pitch Exploration (Vocal Warm-ups)
Song Fragments (Echo Songs or Call-and-Response Songs)
      Simple Songs
      Arioso (Child-created Tunes)
      SongTales
      Movement Exploration (Movement Warm-ups)
Movement for Form and Expression (with Recorded Music or playing simple instruments)
      Movement with the Beat

History of First Steps

For two decades, the Indianapolis Children's Choir has championed young people in our community through high quality musical experiences. While the ICC is well known for its frequent performances, international touring and impact on the quality of life for school aged kids, it has quietly continued to have an important presence and role in the lives of Central Indiana's youngest music lovers and their families as well.

The ICC is proud to announce a new era in its programming and instruction of preschool aged youngsters…The Indianapolis Children's Choir's First Steps in Music. Based on the important research and experience of one of America's foremost music educators, John Feierabend, First Steps in Music brings the playful songs and rhymes throughout history to the lives of today's families. Those tunes and stories that were once shared by generations of children are no longer forgotten with the help of ICC's outstanding teachers capturing their authentic affection, innocence, and wonder. Through The Indianapolis Children's Choir's First Steps in Music, the great tradition and quality of America's most ambitious and successful children's choral organization and its outstanding teachers bring these songs and rhymes and an engaging classroom experience together, planting the seeds for lifelong sensitivity and imagination.

Ask your daycare or preschool to contact the Indianapolis Children's Choir to find out more about this exciting new opportunity for youngsters and their families. Or, call the ICC at 317.940.9640 and find out how you can get more information.
